IATEFL was set up in 1967 and is based in the UK - the head office is in Whitstable, Kent. It has over 3,500 members in 100 different countries throughout the world (source: www.iatefl.org). IATEFL's mission is 'to link, develop and support English Language Teaching professionals throughout the world' (Handbook, p. 3). Their main strategy for achieving such international links is to encourage other language associations to become associate members of IATEFL. The Patron of IATEFL is Professor David Crystal, a well known figure in the ELT world and author of The Cambridge Encyclopaedia of the English Language, Language Death, English as a Global Language.

IATEFL offer the following services to their members:

• A range of regular publications including six copies annually of the magazine IATEFL Issues

• An annual conference with an extensive programme of talks and workshops, which attracts approximately 1,300 members per year

• The opportunity to join any number of the 14 Special Interest Groups (SIG's) which comprise Business English; Computers; ELT Management; ESOL; ESP; Global Issues; Learner Independence; Literature; Media and Cultural Studies; Pronunciation; Research; Teacher Development; Teacher Trainers and Educators; Testing, Evaluation and Assessment and Young Learners

• Providing members with reduced rates on a number of selected professional journals

• Offering scholarships to specific groups of teachers to enable them to attend the Annual Conference

This includes six copies of IATEFL VOICES annually, members rate at all IATEFL events, voting rights-each SIG that you join costs an additional 12GBP (approx 17.40 Euros)
