Julia Tanner : An inspiring figure

Julia Tanner-Bogia will be deeply and sorely missed by everyone in the ELT community - both in Greece and abroad. It was Julia who initiated and masterminded the TESOL Greece annual convention in Thessaloniki, and who then, 18 years ago, had the inspiration and genius to found TESOL Macedonia-Thrace, Northern Greece, which has been going from strength to strength since Julia began reviving its flagging fortunes over the past three years.
Julia’s dedication, enthusiasm, energy, and vital spirit will never be forgotten by anyone who had either the honour of being taught by her, working alongside her, or attending her many talks and presentations. As a teacher and trainer, Julia’s talents are legendary. It goes without saying that she was loved and respected by students and colleagues alike, and she was also an unparalleled and indefatigable leader and organiser in such flourishing institutions as IWOG and TOWER … everything done with unfailing grace and goodwill. And as recently as this Spring Julia attended, under her own sponsorship, the IATEFLA conference in Brighton. That is dedication.
Many epithets and characteristics could be ascribed to Julia’s name. But, as fellow professionals, let us choose just one. Charisma. It is no exaggeration to say that Julia has been the inspiration to thousands of students and aspiring, as well as practising, teachers; and there is no doubt that she will continue to be so for future generations – as long as we keep her name and spirit alive. Which we will. Let that be her epitaph.
Our deepest sympathies go to Julia’s family. Please know that she will always be remembered by everyone who knew and who loved her.
