  • 41st IATEFL Annual Conference and Exhibition Aberdeen
    18th - 22nd April, 2007 IATEFL / British Council Aberdeen Online

The 41st International Annual IATEFL Conference and Exhibition will be held at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre (AECC) in Aberdeen, Scotland from Wednesday 18th to Sunday 22nd April 2007.

Registration is open to any member of the public who wishes to attend the conference. There is a reduced members' rate. (If you wish to join IATEFL in order to take advantage of this rate, please contact the office for a membership form or join online at www.iatefl.org). You will see that IATEFL also offers a single day attendance fee.

There will be an ELT Resources Exhibition, open to all for the length of the conference, showing the latest published materials, computer software and services.

Pre- Conference Events (PCEs) will be held on Wednesday 18th April specifically for delegates who wish to concentrate on a particular topic.

Guy Cook: Unsuitable premises: facts and values in ELT
Guy Cook is Professor of Language and Education at the Open University. He has published widely on English-language teaching, discourse analysis, applied linguistics, and literature teaching.

Agnes Enyedi: The rather well-fed caterpillar and the very hungry butterfly
Ágnes Enyedi works in teacher education and, despite excursions into textbook writing, holding office in IATEFL-Hungary or acting as consultant to the Ministry of Education, she still likes to consider herself as a teacher.

Mike Sharwood Smith: You can take a horse to water...
Mike Sharwood Smith is Chair of Languages at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. He has taught in various countries including France, Sweden, Poland, South Africa and the Netherlands. He is currently involved in the teaching of linguistics, applied linguistics, TESOL and advanced EFL and has over a hundred publications in one or other of these areas.

Maggie Farrar: Dealers in hope
Since May 2003, Maggie has been working as an Operational Director at the National College of School Leadership. Her work at the NCSL includes working with other sectors on a multi agency team development programme, the setting up and support of the new NPQICL ( National Professional Qualification in Integrated Centre Leadership) for early years leaders, supporting Local Authorities on the ‘Change for Children’ agenda and other school and community leadership projects, plus the new Effective Leadership of Extended Schools programme.

For this year’s IATEFL Annual Conference and Exhibition in Aberdeen, IATEFL and the British Council are working together to enable teacher audiences worldwide to participate via the internet and get a taste of what happens over the five days of the annual IATEFL conference.

Our interactive web coverage will include:

- video and audio recordings of some of the presentations and workshops
- interviews with presenters and delegates
- text reports from the event via a dedicated website
- online special interest forums running alongside the main conference programme
- daily blogs from roving reporters supported by IATEFL and the British Council ELTeCS Scheme

  • 24th – 26th March 2006 Vienna, Austria: IATEFL Yl INTERACT Conference: Integrating Drama and Storytelling in ELT

On the occasion of the Austrian EU Presidency, the Centre for Information on Foreign Language Teaching and In-service Training (IFU) in Vienna in co-operation with the IATEFL Yl Sig is organizing the following international event in Vienna in March:

The IATEFL Yl INTERACT Conference: Integrating Drama and Storytelling in ELT

It will take place at the IFU/PIB-Wien, Grenzackerstr. 18, A-1100 Vienna, Austria from 24-26 March 2006.

Registration has been extended! So it is the last chance to register now!

There will be several plenaries and about 40-50 presentations, talks and workshops with various European experts on drama and storytelling for teachers from all types of schools (primary, secondary and vocational). There will also be a reception in the Vienna City Hall on Friday night and a free pre-conference workshop on Friday afternoon.

Information about this year’s plenary speakers:

Michael Swan is a writer specializing in English language teaching and reference materials. He has extensive experience with adult learners, and has worked with teachers in many countries.

Plenary Session Title: The input to language learning: two out of three ain’t good enough

Jennifer Coates is a Professor of English Language and Linguistics at Roehampton University. She is currently investigating the role of humour in informal talk.

Plenary Session Title: Having a laugh: gender and humour in everyday talk

Ryuko Kubota is an Associate Professor in the School of Education and the Department of Asian Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA. She is involved in foreign language teaching and second language teacher education.

Plenary Session Title: Critical approaches to culture in English language teaching

Bena Gül Peker is currently working as Assistant Professor at Gazi University, Faculty of Education, ELT Department, Ankara, Turkey. Among her prefessional interests are teacher empowerment, language teaching methodology, use of drama and action research.
